The Busia County Junior Secondary School Games concluded with exciting performances across various sporting disciplines, with Malaba Township and Lugulu AC Junior Secondary emerging as the top winners. In the girls’ basketball category, Lugulu AC Junior Secondary from Butula Sub-County claimed the title, while the boys’ basketball teams from Busende Junior Secondary and Nambale Urban Junior Secondary secured their places as runners-up. These teams will represent Busia County in the regional finals, giving them an opportunity to compete at a higher level.
In the track events, the primary schools showcased remarkable talent, with Bunyala Sub-County emerging as the overall champions, scoring 166 points. Teso North came second with 151 points, while Teso Central secured third place with 123 points. Other notable performances included Teso South in fourth place with 122 points and Butula finishing fifth with 121 points. Nambale and Samia Sub-Counties tied for sixth with 86 points, while Busia Sub-County trailed with 28 points.
For the junior secondary schools, Teso Central took the top spot with 176 points, followed by Teso South in second place with 141 points. Teso North finished in third with 133 points, while Bunyala secured fourth with 120 points. Butula and Nambale tied for fifth with 119 points, and Samia Sub-County claimed seventh place with 98 points. Busia Sub-County finished last with 38 points.
However, the rugby 15’s finals in both boys’ and girls’ categories were suspended due to concerns over age cheating, with the committee promising to resolve the issue before the finals can proceed.
Moses Wanyama, the sponsor and chief guest, called for increased investment in sports infrastructure in Busia County, emphasizing the need for a stadium to nurture local talent. He also urged the Ministry of Education to increase the funding for co-curricular activities, enabling schools to better prepare students for competitions.
Teso Sub-County Education Quality Assurance Officer Hellen Milomo assured the teams of the county’s support, encouraging the selected players to give their best in the upcoming regional finals, which could be life-changing.
The Western Primary and Junior Secondary Term One School Games are scheduled to take place at Eregi Teachers Training College starting April 1st.
