Mandera South has taken a significant step in improving education access with the launch of a Ksh 7 million bursary programme aimed at supporting underprivileged students. The initiative, driven by the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), is expected to benefit over 200 students enrolled in universities and colleges.
The bursary was officially launched at Mandera Teachers Training College, where Mandera South Member of Parliament Abdulwahab Kore underscored the importance of the initiative. Speaking during the event, MP Kore emphasized that education is a powerful tool for community transformation. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that no student is forced to stay at home due to financial constraints.
“Education is the key to transforming our community. We are determined to support every deserving student to achieve their dreams,” he stated.
The programme specifically prioritizes students pursuing teaching courses, recognizing the acute shortage of teachers in the region. Mandera County leaders have repeatedly voiced concerns about the need for more qualified educators to improve learning conditions and outcomes for students.
Mandera Governor Mohamed Khalif, who was also present at the launch, encouraged students to dedicate themselves to their studies, emphasizing the role of education in shaping the future of the community. He further assured students that the first cohort graduating from Mandera Teachers Training College would be given priority in securing teaching positions within the county.
Mandera Senator Ali Roba echoed the governor’s sentiments, assuring students that the persistent shortage of teachers in the county would soon be addressed. He highlighted the commitment of county leaders to supporting all students pursuing teaching courses as part of broader efforts to bridge the education gap.
County Director of Education, Abdi Sheikh, also attended the event and used the platform to inspire students, reminding them that their success would be instrumental in resolving the region’s educational challenges. He noted that the community’s hopes rest on them to return and contribute to local development.
The launch of the bursary fund is expected to bring significant relief to many families struggling with school fees, enabling more students to complete their education.
