Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has called for increased scholarship opportunities for Kenyan students in agriculture and climate resilience to enhance the country’s food security.
Speaking at the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Gödöllő Campus, Mudavadi emphasized the need for collaboration between Kenyan and Hungarian institutions in agricultural research, particularly in seed development and climate adaptation strategies. He noted that partnerships with organizations like Kenya Seed Company could improve seed quality and foster the development of drought-resistant crops to combat food shortages.
During a visit to the university’s Institute of Technology, Mudavadi was introduced to cutting-edge agricultural innovations, including remote sensing, drone applications for crop protection, air pollution monitoring, and plant stress detection. He highlighted that such technologies could be instrumental in transforming Kenya’s agricultural sector by increasing productivity and sustainability.
The Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences has become a key academic destination for Kenyan students pursuing agricultural studies. According to the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Csaba Gyuricza, 58 Kenyan students are currently enrolled, with 330 applicants competing for 200 scholarships funded by the Hungarian government.
In response to the growing demand for agricultural education, Dr. Gyuricza encouraged Kenya to establish its own scholarship program with the university, allowing more students to benefit from advanced agricultural training. Additionally, he announced full scholarships for three Kenyan athletes interested in studying at the university, which operates five campuses in Hungary and five more across Eastern Europe.
Mudavadi was accompanied by Hungarian Ambassador to Kenya, Zsolt Mészáros, as part of ongoing efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation in education and agricultural innovation. The visit underscores Kenya’s commitment to leveraging international partnerships to enhance food security through research, technology, and capacity building.
By expanding access to agricultural education and technology, Kenya aims to empower its youth with the skills needed to address food production challenges, improve resilience against climate change, and drive the country towards sustainable agricultural growth.
