The government’s ambitious plan to establish 37 sports academies across the country is firmly on track, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has reaffirmed. Speaking recently, Mvurya highlighted that Ksh 1.7 billion has been allocated to the initiative, which aims to serve as a breeding ground for Kenya’s sporting talent.
According to the CS, the sports academies will play a crucial role in scouting, identifying, and nurturing talents across various disciplines. They will also promote fitness awareness and encourage mass participation in sports and recreational activities among Kenyans.
Mvurya underscored the importance of the programme in aligning with President William Ruto’s broader agenda of engaging the youth meaningfully. He stated that through the development of structured sports academies, young people would be provided with opportunities to develop their skills, stay active, and pursue professional careers in sports.
Just two weeks ago, Mvurya presided over the groundbreaking ceremonies for the first two academies. The events were held at Taru Secondary School for the Taru Sports Academy and Matuga Girls Secondary School for the Matuga Sports Academy. These initial projects mark a significant step toward the realization of the government’s plan.
The Taru Sports Academy is expected to focus on the development of talents in athletics, basketball, netball, football, and volleyball, among other sports. Facilities such as modern changing rooms will be included to support both local and regional athletes, enhancing the quality of training and competition.
Mvurya emphasized that the establishment of these academies would not only benefit elite athletes but would also foster a sports culture within communities, providing a platform for children and youth to explore their potential.
He concluded by noting that the government is committed to ensuring the timely completion of the academies, reinforcing Kenya’s position as a powerhouse in global sports and giving young Kenyans a path to excellence.
The establishment of these academies is expected to have a lasting impact, building a stronger sporting future for the nation.
