On Friday, President William Ruto made a significant stop in Tharaka Nithi County, the political home of his Deputy, Kithure Kindiki, where he delivered a host of promises aimed at improving access to university education and enhancing student welfare. The President, on day four of his tour of the Mount Kenya region, addressed students at Tharaka University and emphasized his administration’s commitment to making higher education more affordable and accessible.
In his address, President Ruto assured the students that no one should miss out on university education due to financial constraints. He highlighted the challenges universities had previously faced regarding funding but assured the students that through collaboration with university vice chancellors, the government had established systems to ensure financial stability for institutions.
“We are going to work to make sure every student gets the opportunity to learn,” President Ruto stated, reflecting his administration’s commitment to supporting the next generation of learners. A key part of this promise includes making sure that all students, including university students, are covered under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program.
Ruto also unveiled plans to improve infrastructure at Tharaka University, promising the construction of a modern hostel with a capacity for 1,200 students. The President allocated funds from the Housing Levy to ensure that students, particularly female students, have access to safe and conducive learning environments. He further promised to return within two months to oversee the groundbreaking ceremony for the hostel once the procurement process is completed.
Additionally, President Ruto announced the construction of two boreholes at the university, addressing the institution’s water challenges, and pledged to complete the stalled administration block to enhance the university’s overall functionality.
The President’s visit highlighted his administration’s focus on advancing education and welfare for university students, making significant strides toward a more accessible and sustainable learning environment for Tharaka University and its students.
