The construction of 10 additional classrooms at Mandera Teachers Training College (TTC), a project pledged by President William Ruto, has officially commenced. This initiative, which aims to accommodate the increasing number of teacher trainees, marks a significant milestone in improving education infrastructure in the northern region of Kenya.
President Ruto made the promise during his visit to Mandera County last Tuesday. True to his word, the project, directly funded by the Office of the President, has already broken ground, with expectations to ease congestion and enhance learning conditions for over 500 students currently enrolled at the institution.
While laying the foundation stone for the project, Mandera Governor Mohamed Adan Khalif underscored the importance of timely completion. He reiterated that expanding the institution’s infrastructure would allow for higher student enrollment, addressing the growing demand for teacher training opportunities in the region. Governor Khalif also took the opportunity to highlight the broader challenges affecting education in northern Kenya, particularly the persistent issue of teacher shortages due to insecurity. The mass exodus of educators from the region has posed significant hurdles to the provision of quality education.
The Principal of Mandera TTC, Issack Abdullahi, expressed his appreciation for the President’s commitment, terming the project a game-changer for the institution. He noted that the expansion would not only improve the college’s capacity but also enhance the overall quality of teacher training. According to Abdullahi, the additional classrooms will help decongest existing learning spaces, ensuring that students receive a more conducive learning environment.
Students at the college also voiced their gratitude, acknowledging that the expansion would positively impact their education journey. Many emphasized how the new facilities would provide better learning conditions, ultimately fostering a more productive academic atmosphere.
During his visit to Mandera, President Ruto reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to strengthening the education sector in northern Kenya. He assured residents that his government would continue implementing projects aimed at enhancing learning facilities and addressing the unique educational challenges faced by the region.
The commencement of this project signifies a step forward in bridging educational disparities across Kenya, particularly in marginalized areas like Mandera. With construction now underway, stakeholders in the education sector remain hopeful that the project will be completed on schedule, ensuring that future teacher trainees benefit from improved facilities.
As the government continues to prioritize education, such developments highlight the importance of infrastructure investment in driving access to quality learning opportunities for all Kenyans.
