For many Kenyan students, school has traditionally been about mastering academic subjects, following rules, and sitting for exams. But in today’s world, education needs to go beyond textbooks and chalkboards. Teach for Kenya (TFK) is leading the way in transforming learning by equipping students with emotional intelligence and social skills essential for life.
TFK, an initiative aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4 quality education places trained fellows in underprivileged schools for two years. These fellows not only teach but also serve as mentors and emotional support systems for students facing various challenges, from poverty to family instability.
Beatriz Khalivitsi, a TFK fellow, initially faced a culture shock when she walked into a class of 130 third graders at Githunguri Primary School in Machakos County. “The students expected me to cane them to maintain discipline,” she recalls. Instead, she built trust by creating a safe space where children could open up about their struggles. “When learners feel safe, they can truly focus on learning,” she says.
Similarly, Mafat Flavian, another fellow, teaches a class of 97 students at Imara Comprehensive School in Kayole. “Many children deal with trauma at home, affecting their ability to learn. Before you can teach, you have to connect,” he explains. His role extends beyond academics he acts as a mentor, counselor, and sometimes even a father figure.
Unlike traditional teaching programs, TFK fellows undergo intensive training in emotional intelligence, leadership, and problem-solving before entering classrooms. CEO Yukabeth Kidenda emphasizes that fellows come from diverse backgrounds, not just education. “We’re a leadership development program, not just a teacher staffing initiative,” she says.
As TFK continues to grow, its mission remains clear: to develop well-rounded students who can think critically, lead with empathy, and navigate life’s challenges. “We don’t just teach we transform,” Flavian asserts.
By integrating emotional learning into education, Teach for Kenya is shaping a future where students are not only knowledgeable but also emotionally resilient and socially aware.
