Tragedy struck Ramba Boys High School in Rarieda, Siaya County, when a septic tank collapsed, leading to the deaths of two Form Four students. The incident, which occurred around 6:00 pm, also left two other students injured.
According to reports, a group of students was standing on top of the septic tank when it unexpectedly caved in. While most managed to escape unscathed, two students were trapped and drowned in the underground waste system. The injured students were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
The school administration, local police, and Kenya Red Cross officials responded swiftly to the tragedy. Rescue teams worked tirelessly through the night to retrieve the bodies of the deceased students. Their remains were later transferred to a local morgue as investigations into the cause of the collapse commenced.
In response to the incident, Siaya Governor James Orengo issued a press statement expressing his deepest sympathies to the affected families, students, and school staff. He assured the public of his administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety of learners across the county.
“This is a heartbreaking tragedy, and my thoughts are with the families, students, and teachers of Ramba Boys High School during this difficult time. We will work closely with relevant authorities to ensure safety standards in schools are upheld,” Governor Orengo stated.
He also called for calm and unity, urging parents, students, and the community to support one another as they come to terms with the loss.
The incident raises concerns about school infrastructure safety in Kenya. Many schools, particularly in rural areas, have aging or poorly maintained facilities that pose risks to students. The collapse of the septic tank at Ramba Boys High School underscores the urgent need for school authorities and government agencies to conduct regular safety inspections and repairs to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether negligence or structural weaknesses contributed to the collapse. Meanwhile, grief and shock have engulfed the school community as plans for the burial of the deceased students begin.
The tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the need for strict adherence to safety regulations in schools to protect young lives.
