Imagine a future where coastal travel is revolutionized by electric-powered seagliders — boat-plane hybrids designed to float, foil, and fly over water, promising efficient and swift transportation. Developed by Rhode Island-based startup REGENT, these innovative vehicles harness hydrofoils to glide just above the water’s surface, minimizing drag and ensuring a smooth journey.
The seaglider’s journey begins like a traditional boat, floating on water, before transitioning to foiling as it gains speed. Using wing-like hydrofoils, the seaglider lifts itself about 30 feet (nine meters) above the water, utilizing ground effect principles for enhanced efficiency. REGENT plans to debut a full-scale, 15,000-pound (6,800-kilogram) prototype later this year, capable of carrying up to 12 passengers with a range of approximately 180 miles (290 kilometers), positioning it as a direct competitor to small ferries and seaplanes.
With over 600 seagliders already sold, totaling more than $9 billion in sales, REGENT is expanding production to meet global demand. A new manufacturing facility in Abu Dhabi, alongside operations in North America, will facilitate regional connectivity, linking destinations such as Abu Dhabi to Dubai and serving island communities currently underserved by conventional transport options. This advancement signals a transformative shift in coastal mobility, promising sustainable and efficient travel solutions for coastal regions worldwide.
