Eliud Kipchoge’s Secret to Success: Training on a Gravel Track in Eldoret

As Eliud Kipchoge prepares to chase his third Olympic marathon title at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the world’s greatest marathoner has incorporated an unconventional yet effective training method: running on a gravel track at the Moi University Law School in Annex, Eldoret. This approach, endorsed by his head coach Patrick Sang and training expert Louis Delahaije, plays a crucial role in Kipchoge’s meticulous preparation regimen.

Kipchoge, celebrated for his victories at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, is leaving no stone unturned in his quest for a historic third consecutive gold medal. His team, the NN Running Team, is dedicated to ensuring he remains in peak condition. One significant aspect of this preparation involves training on a gravel track, which offers unique benefits compared to traditional tartan or road surfaces.

Coach Patrick Sang, a seasoned trainer, highlights the advantages of the gravel track. “The surface is good. Generally, when you train on tartan or the road and then train here, which is a dirt track, the recovery and the stress on the legs are less. Recovery for the next hard session is quicker,” Sang explains. This reduced stress on the legs is pivotal for marathoners, who endure long distances and intense training sessions. By integrating gravel track sessions once a week, Kipchoge and his fellow marathoners can maintain their rigorous training schedules while minimizing the risk of overuse injuries.

Louis Delahaije, another expert in Kipchoge’s training camp, points out the geographical benefits of Eldoret. Situated near the equator, the region offers consistent climatic conditions conducive to year-round training. “Eldoret being closer to the equator is a plus for athletes,” Delahaije asserts. Additionally, the gravel track’s softer surface compared to hard asphalt or synthetic tracks significantly lowers the risk of injury, an essential factor for athletes aiming for longevity in their careers.

The dedication of Kipchoge and his training mates is evident in their commitment to early morning sessions. Delahaije marvels at the athletes’ discipline, noting that they are often found running before the crack of dawn. This routine not only beats the heat of the day but also instills a sense of discipline and mental toughness—qualities essential for Olympic champions.

The support from his experienced coaching team and the strategic training decisions are setting the stage for what could be another historic performance at the Olympics.
