Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KTDA) CEO, John Paul Okwiri, is urging Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Kenya to increase their adoption of digital tools, stressing that technology is a vital driver of efficiency and competitiveness in today’s business environment. Speaking at an economic empowerment conference hosted by Abojani Investment, Okwiri highlighted the growing role of SMEs in Kenya’s economy and how digital transformation can significantly bolster their operations.
“SMEs should do more in the use of digital tools. They should be using technology to run their businesses and reach customers,” said Okwiri, emphasizing that digital tools are not just a trend but a crucial business necessity. He pointed out that in today’s fast-paced, globalized world, the ability to adopt and implement digital solutions could be the key differentiator for businesses seeking to thrive in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
According to Okwiri, embracing digital tools can streamline operations and provide SMEs with more effective ways to interact with customers, manage finances, and expand their reach. Digital financing tools, such as mobile wallets and online banking, have already simplified transaction processes and cash flow management, reducing the reliance on physical infrastructure and facilitating faster and more secure financial operations.
“Analytics tools enable SMEs to understand customer preferences better, creating more personalized marketing strategies and engagement,” he added. These tools allow businesses to track consumer behavior, tailor products and services to meet demand, and maintain a direct connection with their clientele. This level of personalization enhances customer loyalty and drives long-term growth for businesses.
Furthermore, Okwiri highlighted the immense potential of e-commerce platforms and social media in helping SMEs access a global customer base. The internet has lowered the barriers to international markets, allowing even small businesses to compete on a global scale without the need for substantial physical infrastructure. Through these digital platforms, SMEs can market their products and services, generate sales, and build brand recognition at a fraction of the cost of traditional advertising channels.
However, Okwiri stressed that the shift to digital tools is not without its challenges. He noted that the digital transformation process requires significant investments in both skills development and infrastructure. While Kenya is progressing in terms of technological adoption, there remains a need for continuous capacity building within the workforce, especially among small business owners and their employees.
“We aim to contribute two per cent of GDP by the year 2030,” Okwiri said, emphasizing Konza Technopolis’ commitment to driving the country’s digital economy forward. By 2030, Konza aims to position Kenya as a global leader in technology, innovation, and business competitiveness, helping to foster economic growth and create thousands of new jobs.
Konza Technopolis, a flagship project of Kenya’s Vision 2030 economic development blueprint, is central to the country’s digital transformation strategy. The technopolis is envisioned as a world-class city, powered by a robust ICT sector, modern infrastructure, and governance systems conducive to business growth. With its focus on innovation, Konza is positioning Kenya as a key player in the African tech ecosystem.
In addition to providing a conducive environment for businesses, Konza also offers tax incentives for companies investing in technology training and digital infrastructure. These incentives are expected to drive more businesses to invest in Kenya’s ICT sector, which, in turn, will boost the country’s technological capacity and global competitiveness.
The government is also taking steps to ensure that digital tools are accessible to all. As part of the National Broadband Strategy, the government is rolling out subsidized internet access in underserved areas, and Konza Technopolis is leading the implementation of the Jitume digital hubs across every county in Kenya. This initiative focuses on equipping youth and underserved communities with digital skills, thereby empowering them to access digital jobs and foster economic empowerment in every corner of the country.
In conclusion, Konza Technopolis is not only at the forefront of Kenya’s ICT transformation but also serves as a catalyst for economic empowerment and the future of SMEs in Kenya. By embracing digital tools, SMEs can unlock vast opportunities for growth, efficiency, and market expansion, securing a competitive edge in an increasingly digital world.
