Leaders and residents of Embu County have expressed their concern over the escalating political intolerance in the region, urging for an end to the culture of heckling and disruption during public events. The issue has gained prominence following recent incidents, including the heckling of President William Ruto during his visit for the ordination of Embu Diocese Bishop Peter Kimani and the disruption of a eulogy by Public Service CS Justin Muturi at the burial of former Senator Lenny Kivuti’s son.
Local leaders have warned that this growing trend, if unchecked, could tarnish the image of the county and negatively impact its development. They emphasized that such behavior could deter potential investors and visitors, undermining the county’s progress and reputation. In a bid to address the situation, these leaders are calling for unity, civility, and hospitality, urging residents to refrain from booing public figures.
Political lobbyist Kiragacha Mwaniki was among those leading the charge, criticizing some local politicians for allegedly orchestrating these disruptions to undermine President Ruto’s administration. Mwaniki called for a shift in focus from divisive politics to delivering essential services for the people of Embu. “Heckling will only hinder progress,” Mwaniki stated, adding that unity and collaboration with the government were crucial to realizing the county’s development potential.
Gikundo Wa Gikundo, a local figure, further raised concerns about external interference, alleging that some of the hecklers were paid outsiders brought in to create chaos. He also accused former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of fueling divisions within the county, an accusation Gachagua’s supporters have yet to address publicly.
Hesbon Nyaga, another local leader, echoed the call for unity, urging residents to focus on the positive aspects of governance and development rather than being swayed by negative rhetoric. Mugo Mate, Chairman of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, also weighed in, advising President Ruto to investigate the underlying causes of public discontent and ensure leaders work together for the county’s benefit.
As Embu County continues to grapple with this challenge, leaders are hopeful that the region will reclaim its reputation as a cooperative and development-focused area, where unity prevails over division.
