Minority Leader in the National Assembly Junet Mohammed urged Kenyans and politicians to refrain from engaging in premature political rhetoric and instead focus on the upcoming 2027 elections. Mohammed emphasized that Kenya, as a constitutional democracy, holds elections every five years, and it is important to respect the mandate given to elected leaders for the full term.
Addressing political leaders who are already calling for the removal of the current government, Mohammed expressed his surprise at the persistence of these calls, noting that it was only a year after the 2022 elections. He shared that some constituents have approached him, seeking help to oust their elected leaders, even though these leaders had been voted in for a five-year term. However, Mohammed made it clear that his role as Minority Leader was not to entertain such requests and that the proper course of action was to wait until the next election cycle in 2027.
The Minority Leader also pointed out that even those on the Majority side, who may be growing impatient, should respect the electoral process. He stressed that if some voters were dissatisfied with their current leadership, there were still others who remained steadfast in their support. Mohammed’s message was clear: political work, particularly efforts to change leadership, should not be rushed, and everyone should wait for the opportunity provided by the 2027 elections.
Furthermore, Mohammed reaffirmed the role of the Minority side in the National Assembly, which is to safeguard the rights of the people through constitutional means. He assured the public that the Minority side was committed to its duties and would continue to uphold democracy in the House.
This statement was delivered during the burial of the late Mama Anne Nanyama in Bungoma, where President William Ruto, Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi, and other political figures were also in attendance. Mohammed’s call for patience highlights the importance of allowing elected officials to serve their full terms and the need for thoughtful engagement in future elections.
