Nigerian singer and songwriter Ayra Starr has cemented her name in music history after becoming the first African woman to win the Best International Act at the MOBO Awards. The award ceremony, which took place on Tuesday in Newcastle, UK, also saw her claim the Best African Music Act, making her the first woman in 16 years to win in that category.
The MOBO Awards (Music of Black Origin) celebrate achievements in music genres with Black influences, including hip-hop, grime, R&B, soul, reggae, jazz, gospel, and African music. The 21-year-old Ayra Starr’s achievement reflects the growing influence of Afrobeats on the global stage, as Nigerian artists continue to gain international recognition.
Ayra Starr’s victories were not easy, as she faced stiff competition in both categories. For Best African Music Act, she was nominated alongside Asake, BNXN & Ruger, King Promise, Odumodublvck, Rema, Shallipopi, Tems, Tyla, and Uncle Waffles. Meanwhile, for Best International Act, she competed against industry heavyweights such as Kendrick Lamar and Nicki Minaj.
During her acceptance speech, the visibly emotional singer expressed her gratitude to her team, supporters, and the MOBO Awards for the recognition. She also admitted to being nervous but acknowledged how much the award meant to her and the African music scene.
Ayra Starr’s triumph marks a turning point for female African artists who are often overshadowed in major international music awards. Her success follows a wave of African artists, such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Tems, who have broken barriers in the UK and US music markets. The singer’s signature sound, which blends Afrobeats, R&B, and pop influences, has resonated with audiences globally, making her one of the leading figures in the new wave of African talent.
