Kenyan media personality and content creator Azziad Nasenya has found herself at the center of controversy following claims that she has outstanding debts. The allegations emerged after blogger Edgar Obare shared messages from anonymous sources accusing her of borrowing large sums of money and failing to repay them.
As the debate gained momentum online, an old interview featuring Azziad resurfaced, shedding light on her perspective regarding financial independence and borrowing. In a past conversation with filmmaker Phil Karanja, Azziad expressed her firm stance on self-sufficiency.
“There is satisfaction in making money from your own hard work. I sleep well knowing that I made that KSh 50 on my own. I don’t know how to beg, and I never want to put myself in a position where I have to,” she stated in the interview.
The debt accusations against Azziad surfaced after Obare alleged that she borrowed KSh 400,000 from a close friend with a promise to repay within three days. However, the debt reportedly remained unsettled months later. Additionally, the blogger shared purported voice recordings of a distressed individual allegedly Azziad speaking about financial difficulties.
Further fueling the controversy, TikToker Mary Musyoka also claimed that Azziad owed her KSh 300,000. These allegations have sparked widespread online discussions regarding Azziad’s financial management and public persona.
Azziad’s manager, Peter Kawa, addressed the claims in an interview with journalist Ankali Ray in late January 2025. He stated that Azziad was currently in Germany with her mother but declined to confirm or deny the accusations.
“She is okay and with her mum in Germany. I cannot confirm or deny anything about the claims circulating online. Whoever wants to speak can speak,” Kawa commented, suggesting that Azziad might or might not address the issue personally.
Azziad rose to prominence in 2019 after a viral TikTok video of her dancing to Utawezana by Femi One and Mejja catapulted her to fame. Since then, she has built a significant social media presence, amassing over 3.2 million TikTok followers and over 66 million likes.
Beyond content creation, she has ventured into acting, radio hosting, and brand endorsements. She has appeared in TV shows such as The Odd Pair (2023), Faithless (2023), and Selina (2018). Additionally, she serves as the Founder and Board Chair of Zynergy Point, a consultancy aimed at professionalizing content creation in Africa.
Despite the ongoing controversy, Azziad’s influence in Kenya’s entertainment industry remains significant. Whether she will directly address the debt allegations remains to be seen.
