Award-winning Kenyan musician Bien-Aime Baraza has opened up about the crucial role his wife, Chiki Kuruka, has played in both his music career and personal life. The former Sauti Sol member credits Chiki, a fitness enthusiast, media influencer, and professional choreographer, for guiding his journey since the band went on hiatus, allowing each member to explore solo projects.
In a recent interview with Mpasho following his big win at the Trace Music Awards, Bien spoke passionately about how Chiki has been instrumental in shaping his success. He emphasized that trust is everything in an artist’s life, and having a manager who truly understands and wants the best for you is a game-changer.
“The journey has been crazy, man! You know, the thing about artists is that it’s all about trust. You need someone you trust to handle all your affairs, someone you trust with your life and your career,” Bien shared.
Reflecting on his decision to have Chiki as his manager, Bien pointed out that many African artists have found success through family management. To him, having the right life partner means that everything else falls into place seamlessly.
Beyond managing his career, Chiki has also been a major influence in Bien’s artistic growth. He recalled how, when they first met, Chiki did not speak Swahili, which pushed him to communicate in English more often. This, he believes, played a key role in improving his communication skills and ability to connect with a global audience.
Bien also acknowledged Chiki’s unwavering support during his transition from a band member to a solo act. The shift came with bouts of anxiety and self-doubt, but Chiki’s encouragement helped him maintain a positive mindset.
“When I was transitioning from being in a band to a solo act last year, I had so many bouts of anxiety, doubt, and imposter syndrome. She really helped put me in a good mindset, in a good perspective,” he admitted.
Their partnership, both personal and professional, has strengthened their bond. Bien highlighted how their constant discussions about business feel natural and enjoyable rather than just work. He concluded, “This relationship has saved my marriage… well, not saved it, but it has made my marriage so fun. I’m really enjoying the space we are in right now.”
Clearly, Chiki Kuruka is not just Bien’s wife but a pillar of his success and happiness.
