Kenyan singer Bien has opened up about a pivotal moment in his career how gospel artist Size 8 Reborn pushed him to buy his first car. In an undated video, the recently crowned Best Artist in Eastern Africa recalled how he never had plans to purchase a vehicle until Size 8 encouraged him.
“The first time I bought a car, I did not even have plans to do so. It is Size 8 who pushed me to buy my first car, hata sikuwa najua kudrive (I didn’t even know how to drive),” Bien revealed. According to him, Size 8 insisted that he needed to upgrade his lifestyle, reminding him that his music was playing on the radio and it was time to stop using public transport.
However, Bien’s journey has not been without challenges. He also shared a harrowing experience from 2007 when he lost 16 teeth after being hit by a car. The incident happened while he was crossing the road with his sister Biju and fellow artists Wakamba Wawili, Arap Duo, and Wendy Kimani. They had just finished recording a song about post-election violence.
Despite these setbacks, Bien has risen to be one of the most successful artists in Africa. In a recent interview, he reflected on his struggles with self-doubt and how his wife, Chiki, has played a crucial role in his career.
“The journey has been crazy, man! You need someone you trust to handle your affairs, someone you trust with your life and your career,” Bien told Mpasho after his big win at the Trace Music Awards. He pointed out how many successful African artists are managed by their family members, a decision he also considered deeply.
Chiki, he says, has helped him transition from being in a band to a solo act. She has guided him through moments of anxiety and imposter syndrome, ultimately shaping his confidence and global appeal.
Bien also credited their working relationship for strengthening their marriage. “It has made our marriage so fun. We enjoy it. We can be in bed at midnight talking business, and we don’t see it as work we actually have fun,” he shared.
Through his journey, Bien’s story is a testament to the power of mentorship, resilience, and the right support system in achieving success.
