Pop music fans may have a new dream collaboration to look forward to as Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande hinted at working together in the studio during a surprise appearance at a ‘Wicked’ film screening. The event took place at the Directors Guild of America’s theater in Los Angeles on Tuesday night (July 16), where Billie, 23, interviewed Ariana, 31, about her role as Glinda The Good Witch in the highly anticipated movie adaptation of the Broadway classic.
As the Q&A session neared its end, Billie’s slip of the tongue sparked excitement when she accidentally referenced “songs” instead of “questions.” Realizing her mistake, she quickly corrected herself, saying, “Oh my God. I meant questions. I’m on tour, you guys. I’m used to saying that. Sorry.” However, Ariana seized the moment to acknowledge the possibility of a collaboration, responding, “We do need to do that, though.” Billie enthusiastically agreed, adding, “I would love to do that.”
This interaction has fueled speculation among fans eager to see the two pop icons blend their unique styles. While Ariana is known for her powerhouse vocals and R&B-infused pop sound, Billie’s ethereal, moody aesthetic has made her one of the most distinctive artists of her generation. A joint project between the two could offer a fresh and dynamic take on contemporary pop music.
During the event, Ariana revealed that she had Billie at the top of her wish list for the interview but didn’t expect her to be available due to her busy schedule. “My team was like: Who would be a cool person to do this? Who’s your dream person?” Ariana recalled. “I was like, Billie, [but] she’s not gonna say yes. She’s too busy. She’s too fabulous. It’s too much. But she said yes, and I was like, ‘Oh, s***.’ Now I’m so nervous.”
Billie, a longtime admirer of Ariana, confirmed that she has been a fan since childhood. She revealed that her personal YouTube channel, which she has used since she was 11, still contains old comments expressing her admiration for the ‘Positions’ singer. “I was just in the car telling my mom that you can find old interviews of you from like 2014 with Billie Eilish comments like, ‘I’m Team Ari.’ I didn’t realize that they were still up,” she admitted.
As excitement builds among fans, only time will tell if Billie and Ariana will follow through on their promise to collaborate. If they do, it could be one of the most anticipated musical partnerships in recent years.
