Kenyan producer and songwriter DTX is making waves again with his latest release, Swag So Fresh (SSF), a high-energy drill track featuring Buruklyn Boyz and Big Yasa. The record blends the raw essence of Kenyan drill music with a mainstream feel, creating a song that resonates with both hardcore rap fans and a broader audience.
DTX, known for his versatility across multiple genres, expressed his excitement about working with Buruklyn Boyz, acknowledging their impact on the drill scene in Kenya. “I’ve been a fan of Buruklyn Boyz since day one. They’re the OG drillers, pioneers of the sound in Kenya, so it only made sense to experiment with them on a fresh hip-hop wave,” he said.
Buruklyn Boyz, the Buruburu-based rap duo, have been instrumental in popularizing drill music in Kenya, making them a natural choice for this collaboration. Adding Big Yasa, a rapper known for his street anthems and strong representation of Kibera (Namba 8), to the mix brings an extra layer of authenticity to the track.
“Big Yasa? That’s the voice of the streets, the King of Namba 8. Together, we made a feel-good song that anyone can jam to,” DTX noted. The song not only bridges different Nairobi neighborhoods, Kibera and Buru Buru, but also embodies the urban culture that fuels the city’s hip-hop movement.
DTX has always been known for pushing sonic boundaries. His genre-spanning portfolio includes pop, electronic, hip-hop, R&B, dancehall, afrobeat, trap, drill, dubstep, and EDM. This creative flexibility has led him to collaborate with some of Kenya’s biggest artists, including Bien, Chimano, Fancy Fingers, King Kaka, Savara, and Boutross.
With Swag So Fresh, he brings together hard-hitting drill elements and mainstream appeal, proving that rap and drill music can have a pop sensibility. “Rap and drill can be pop too—it’s all about the emotions that you feed your listeners. For this project, Big Yasa and Buruklyn Boyz represent a mix of hard bars and mainstream appeal—They are a perfect fit for ‘Swag So Fresh,’” he added.
The song serves as a celebration of Kenyan street culture while embracing the global drill movement. As the genre continues to evolve, collaborations like this solidify Kenya’s place in the international hip-hop scene, making Swag So Fresh an anthem that is sure to leave a lasting impact.
