Nigerian Afropop singer and songwriter Ugochi Lydia Onuoha, popularly known as Guchi, has addressed one of the funniest rumors she has ever heard about herself. The speculation, which linked her romantically to Kenyan singer and entrepreneur Willy Paul, had the star laughing out loud.
Guchi, who landed in Kenya just two days ago, found the rumor amusing, especially since she sees Willy Paul as nothing more than a brother. In an interview with local media, the “Benzema” hitmaker expressed her disbelief, stating, “The funniest rumour I’ve heard about myself is that I am dating Willy Paul,” before chuckling softly.
The singer further clarified that she has a deep respect for Willy Paul but only as a friend. “That is very funny… because he is just like a brother to me,” she added with sincerity. Guchi also confirmed that she is currently single, emphasizing that her main focus remains her music career. When asked directly about her relationship status, she simply replied, “No, I am not dating anyone.”
Guchi, who has gained recognition for hit songs like “Jeniffer” and “Benzema,” dodged the question when asked about her favorite Kenyan artist. Instead of singling out a name, she praised the entire Kenyan music industry, saying, “There are too many talented artists here. Seriously, there are so many, so I’m not mentioning any names.”
Her connection with Willy Paul goes back to 2022 when the two collaborated on the song “You.” The track, which garnered over 7.2 million views on YouTube, showcased undeniable chemistry between the two artists in both the music video and its promotion. Willy Paul, who heads Saldido International Entertainment, had predicted that their song would be a massive hit, similar to his past collaboration with Jamaican singer Alaine.
His prediction came true when, in 2023, Willy Paul proudly announced that “You” had become the first song by an East African artist to be featured with a banner across all Sub-Saharan African markets on TikTok. The milestone was further amplified by the track’s immense popularity, accumulating nearly one million video challenges on the platform.
Celebrating the achievement, Willy Paul took to social media, writing, “Nani Simba sasa jameni? Pozze tu (Let’s be honest, who is the lion now? Only Pozze),” as he reveled in the historic moment.
Despite the rumors, Guchi and Willy Paul remain professionally aligned, continuing to make waves in the African music industry. For now, Guchi remains focused on her music, brushing off the gossip with laughter and grace.
