Veteran journalist Ken Mijungu has confirmed his departure from KTN News, ending a four-year chapter with the Standard Group PLC. Mijungu, who cited contract-related reasons for his exit, made the announcement in a candid statement to Kenyans.co.ke, revealing that he had chosen not to renew his contract with the media outlet.
In a heartfelt farewell message shared on his social media platforms, Mijungu reflected on his time at KTN, stating, “A good dancer knows when to exit the stage! 4 years of absolute adrenaline and nothing but the best; as unpredictable as it was, it is time to find something else to do when I still can. Forever grateful to God, my colleagues at Standard Group PLC, and KTN News. Adios!”
While his immediate career plans remain unclear, rumors about his next move have circulated widely. Some reports have suggested that Mijungu may join Cape Media, the company behind TV47 and Radio 47, which is owned by Prof. Simon Gicharu, the founder of Mount Kenya University and a prominent billionaire.
Mijungu’s journey into journalism is nothing short of remarkable. A trained lawyer with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Moi University, his career in the media industry began by chance. In the wake of the 2007/2008 post-election violence, Mijungu, who was then a cab driver, captured footage of the devastating events in Kibera using a borrowed camera. The footage caught the attention of K24’s management, who had lost their own recordings amid the chaos, leading to Mijungu’s recruitment as a reporter.
Over the years, Mijungu’s career trajectory saw him move through several prestigious media houses. He worked at K24 for nearly four years, followed by a brief stint at CCTV Africa (now CGTN Africa), where he reported on major international events. His time at Nation Media Group’s NTV, where he hosted the current affairs program “Sidebar,” solidified his reputation as a sharp and insightful journalist.
Mijungu’s career reached new heights when he joined KTN News in December 2020, returning to television after a hiatus. During his four years at KTN, he further cemented his standing in Kenyan journalism, showcasing his skill as a seasoned anchor.
Apart from his media career, Mijungu is also an entrepreneur with interests in the transport and aviation sectors. His departure from KTN comes just a month after that of another high-profile journalist, Eric Latiff, marking a significant shift within the Standard Media Group.
As Mijungu steps into the next phase of his career, his departure signifies the end of an era for KTN News, while leaving room for new opportunities ahead.
