Kenyan rap heavyweight Khaligraph Jones has once again reaffirmed his dominance in the hip-hop scene with the release of Khali Cartel 5. The latest installment in his highly acclaimed Khali Cartel series dropped on Thursday, March 6, 2025, featuring a star-studded lineup of top East African rappers.
The track brings together lyrical powerhouses such as Jakk Quill, Ruyonga, Fresh Like Uhh, Dyana Cods, Mex Cortez, and the legendary Abbas Kubaff. The song was produced by Blu Ink Corp, in collaboration with one of East Africa’s top producers, Vince on the Beat. The project, sponsored by Blu Ink Corp and 22Bet, was designed to showcase elite rap talent from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Despite its initial success, Khali Cartel 5 has faced criticism from some fans who feel it does not match the raw energy of its predecessors. One fan, Gitaya, commented, “I am a really great fan of OG but damn, what did you do with this piece? Go and chill and come up with a song that will bring people together. This one is below average.”
Khaligraph, known for his witty and unapologetic responses, quickly clapped back at critics. In response to Gitaya, he sarcastically commented, “Ndio maana umevaa iyo jeans imefinya msedes? Si huyo ni wewe hapo juu.” (That’s why you’re wearing those tight jeans? Isn’t that you up there?) Another fan, Bwire Official, expressed frustration over the song’s style, stating, “Same old beat, same old style, same old words being reused in every track. Not hating, but this is nonsense.” Khaligraph humorously responded, “Okay, the next one tutaimba na Kisii. Ombachi, anza kuandika verse.” (Okay, the next one we’ll rap in Kisii. Ombachi, start writing your verse.)
However, despite the mixed reactions, Khali Cartel 5 has been a massive success. The song has quickly climbed the charts, amassing over 450,000 views on YouTube and currently holding the top trending spot. Loyal fans have praised its authenticity, emphasizing that Khaligraph’s initiative continues to uplift upcoming artists in the industry.
Khaligraph’s Khali Cartel series has played a significant role in introducing fresh talent to the mainstream. A notable example is Karen, who featured in Khali Cartel 3 and gained widespread recognition afterward. Through this platform, the OG continues to shape the future of East African hip-hop, proving that the genre remains supreme.
