After weeks of speculation regarding the relapse of former journalist Kimani Mbugua, he has been given another opportunity for rehabilitation. The initiative comes from a prominent political figure who had initially facilitated his admission to a rehabilitation center last year. Expressing disappointment at the turn of events, efforts were made to locate Kimani, who was found in Makongeni estate, Thika, Kiambu County. Once located, he was brought to a central facility where his immediate needs, including clothing and personal hygiene, were attended to.
An extensive counselling session was conducted, leading to the decision to offer Kimani another chance at rehabilitation. Plans to transport him to Mombasa by flight were reconsidered, and instead, arrangements were made for him to be driven back to the Mombasa Women’s Rehabilitation Centre. The decision was made with the intention of ensuring he remains at the facility until he fully recovers.
At this stage, his family has not been involved, but assurances have been given that he will stay in rehabilitation until he regains stability. Upon successful completion of the program, he will be offered an opportunity to work at the center, similar to another former patient, a renowned sports figure, who has since transitioned into providing counselling services at the same facility.
During a recent celebration, Kimani was provided with a fresh set of clothes and was dressed in traditional attire before sharing a meal with his benefactor. A direct request was made to the officials at the rehabilitation center to ensure he remains under their care until he is well again. Communication also took place with another former champion athlete, who is also receiving treatment at the center.
Reflecting on previous efforts to assist journalists struggling with various challenges, the benefactor acknowledged mixed outcomes. One journalist, previously admitted to a mental health facility alongside Kimani and later transferred to the same rehabilitation center, has since made significant progress. She is now employed at a national television station and has recently produced two documentaries—one covering tuberculosis and the other highlighting World Bipolar Day. This success story demonstrates the positive impact of the initiative and the potential for individuals to reclaim their careers.
However, not all efforts have yielded favorable results. Another individual who was part of the same rehabilitation effort resumed heavy drinking after being discharged, presenting an ongoing challenge. Despite this setback, there remains a strong commitment to ensuring that Kimani receives the necessary care and support to facilitate his full recovery.
The continued intervention and dedication to assisting individuals facing similar struggles highlight the broader mission of offering second chances. With the appropriate support systems in place, those battling personal difficulties can regain control of their lives and find meaningful opportunities for reintegration into society. Ensuring that Kimani remains in rehabilitation and providing him with a structured path forward is a step toward making lasting change in his life.
