The controversy surrounding Sarah and Simon Kabu has taken a legal turn after their former nanny, identified as JK, filed a lawsuit against the couple, seeking Sh21 million in damages. The case, which stems from an alleged assault and leaked CCTV footage, has sparked widespread debate on privacy rights and workplace ethics.
In December 2024, a video surfaced online showing a woman, believed to be Sarah Mtalii (Sarah Kabu), in a physical altercation with another woman presumed to be their nanny. The footage, reportedly captured from the couple’s home CCTV system, shows the nanny fleeing after a brief struggle with Sarah. The video quickly gained traction, drawing mixed reactions from the public.
JK has now accused the Kabus of multiple violations, including privacy infringement, cyber harassment, and emotional distress. She argues that she was unaware of the surveillance and did not consent to being recorded, making it a potential breach of her constitutional right to privacy. Furthermore, she claims that Simon Kabu either deliberately or negligently leaked the video, subjecting her to cyberbullying and reputational harm.
In her lawsuit, JK has named Bonfire Adventure & Events, Simon Kabu, and Sarah Njoki Nyaga as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respondents, respectively. She is demanding Sh7 million each for sexual harassment, breach of confidentiality, and reputational damage, totaling Sh21 million in claims.
Court documents reveal that JK was employed in June 2024 to care for the Kabus’ children. However, she claims the job became unstable due to the couple’s marital disputes. Matters allegedly escalated in July 2024, when Sarah, who had moved out, returned unexpectedly and dismissed JK. The following morning, JK alleges that Sarah attacked her with a kitchen knife, inflicting an injury on her arm. She further asserts that she was pressured into settling the matter out of court.
Simon Kabu has challenged the case, arguing that the Employment and Labour Relations Court lacks jurisdiction over the matter. His legal team is expected to push for dismissal or transfer of the case to a different judicial platform.
Following the video’s release, Sarah addressed the issue indirectly in a separate video, where she introduced her new nannies and dismissed the accusations. She referred to her former home as “Egypt” or “Pharaoh’s house,” suggesting a period of hardship. She also challenged JK to reveal her identity and explain the circumstances surrounding her employment.
As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen how the court will rule on the privacy and employment law aspects of the lawsuit.
