Shiko Nguru, an influencer, author, and marketing professional, recently shed light on why she has no plans to return to full-time content creation. Known for co-running the now-defunct YouTube channel The Green Calabash, which once boasted over 500,000 subscribers, Shiko’s decision to step away from the platform surprised many of her fans.
In a candid Q&A session on her YouTube channel, Shiko explained that while freelancing had its perks, she found stability in traditional employment more fulfilling.
Shiko revealed that despite the creative freedom content creation offered, it lacked the financial security she desired. “What I realized during my time as a freelance creative is that I love the stability of formal employment. There are things I don’t like, but my creative juices flow better when I know I have the assurance of a paycheck at the end of the month,” she shared.
She further admitted that relying solely on content creation made her feel vulnerable. “I don’t want to be fully dependent on my art because then I stop being creative. Transitioning back to employment was a relief because I no longer had to worry about where the money would come from.”
Despite her impressive qualifications two degrees and prior work experience Shiko acknowledged that securing a stable job was not easy. “It was difficult to find a job, even with my background. Freelancing felt too uncertain for me. It was also hard balancing work and time with the kids I started feeling guilty for missing moments with them.”
Struggles of Balancing Work and Creativity
Even after settling into an 8-to-5 job, Shiko admitted that she sometimes misses out on content creation opportunities. “Sometimes brands reach out, but I’m either too tired from my day job or don’t have a nanny. I do miss out on a lot of things, but we can’t do everything. It’s a struggle to balance.”
Support System and Self-Care
Through it all, Shiko credits her husband, radio host Mike Mondo, her best friend, and her immediate family for being her pillars of support. “Sometimes I complain about being tired because I juggle my job, content creation, and family life. I try to make time for myself, but I rely heavily on my nanny, Mike, and my best friend. I also remind myself to be kind to myself sometimes, my battery is just done.”
While she may not be returning to full-time content creation, Shiko’s journey highlights the importance of choosing a path that brings both financial stability and personal fulfillment.
