Kenyan Urbantone artist Tipsy Gee has been making waves in the music industry with his unique sound and approach to success. In a recent interview with Kerry Martin and Kwambox, the “Finish Kumalo” hitmaker shared his candid thoughts on the Gengetone music genre, dismissing it as outdated and lacking in sophistication.
“I was a fan of Gengetone. I even started as a Gengetone artist before I moved to Urbantone. We could not have joined something that was already dead. Waache ushamba (let them leave behind their ghettoness). Gengetone artists have that kind of vibe,” he remarked.
While speaking with Maina Kageni on Classic 105, the Gen Z artist revealed that his music journey started out of sheer idleness. However, he and his peers soon discovered the power of social media in pushing their content. “We started pushing by posting on our status and on Instagram while on campus,” he explained.
Tipsy Gee is not slowing down anytime soon. He announced that his debut album is set to be released in April, signaling a major milestone in his career. In addition to the album, he has been reaching out to top artists for collaborations. “I have DM’d Darasa, but he is yet to respond. I would also want to work with Spice from Uganda,” he disclosed.
Beyond recording music, the artist is gearing up for an international tour, with Australia as his next destination. His growing fanbase and music influence have made him one of the most sought-after young artists in the industry.
With the release of his hit song “Tiktoker,” featuring fellow Urbantone artists Gody Tennor and Kappy, Tipsy Gee has not only gained massive popularity but also financial success. The song has already amassed 17 million views, a clear testament to its widespread appeal.
Speaking in an interview that has been making rounds on social media, he emphasized how lucrative the music industry can be. “I usually do not like to mention amounts a lot, but all I can say is music pays,” he stated confidently.
Despite his success, Tipsy Gee has opted for a low-profile lifestyle, choosing to reinvest his earnings into his music career. “All I can say is tunakula pesa poa. We have money. But personally, I am investing my money back into music because it has potential. I want to work on this for the next 15 years since I have seen it is very promising. Right now, music is sustaining me and even taking care of my parents,” he said.
With such determination and a clear vision for the future, Tipsy Gee is poised to become a dominant force in the African music scene.
