Since her breakout hit Water took the world by storm in July 2023, South African pop sensation Tyla has experienced a meteoric rise to global fame. The song, propelled by a viral TikTok dance trend, not only catapulted her career but also earned her the inaugural Grammy for Best African Music Performance in 2024. However, with fame has come significant lifestyle changes, something the 23-year-old recently opened up about in an interview with British Vogue.
Tyla, who graced the magazine’s March issue cover, revealed how stardom has made it nearly impossible for her to enjoy simple pleasures like taking a stroll in the park or ordering food at a Nando’s restaurant. She recalled a moment when she tried to place an order, only to have the entire staff break into song, chanting lyrics from Water: “Make me sweat…” While she appreciates the love from her fans, she admitted to missing the normalcy of everyday life.
Despite her global recognition, Tyla has also faced public scrutiny. At the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, she was criticized for asking her friend, rapper Lil Nas X, to hold her award while she delivered her acceptance speech. Some labeled her as “entitled,” but she was quick to clarify the situation, explaining that the trophy was heavy and that she needed to focus on delivering her message.
“Guys, those awards are very heavy! And at that moment, I had an important message,” she explained.
Navigating fame as a young woman in the music industry has also required extra precautions. Tyla shared that she has never attended a recording session alone, a decision she made to protect herself in an industry that has been shaken by the #MeToo movement. Her parents, Sharleen and Sherwin Seethal, have always been particularly protective, ensuring that she remains safe while pursuing her dreams.
Reflecting on her journey, Tyla revealed that self-acceptance wasn’t always easy. She recounted attending a predominantly white primary school where she struggled with her identity. However, high school, which had a more diverse and culturally rich environment, helped her embrace and take pride in who she is today.
Despite the sacrifices that fame has brought, Tyla remains proud of the woman she has become. With her career soaring and her influence growing, she continues to make waves in the music industry while staying true to herself.
