Veteran journalist Ken Mijungu has been dismissed from TV47 just weeks after joining the station, raising questions about what transpired behind the scenes. The sudden termination was confirmed in an official letter dated February 22, 2025, from Cape Media Ltd, the parent company of TV47.
Mijungu had officially signed his service agreement on January 31, 2025, but his tenure at the station was short-lived. According to the termination letter, he had requested time off to reflect on his role at TV47. Following this request, the management reviewed the situation and decided to end his contract effective immediately. While the exact reasons remain undisclosed, the statement suggested that the decision was made amicably, with Cape Media expressing willingness for potential future collaborations.
“This development notwithstanding, we shall be pleased to engage with you on future possibilities,” the letter stated.
Despite the station’s diplomatic approach, neither TV47 nor Mijungu has publicly commented on the specifics of his departure. This has fueled speculation about possible internal conflicts, strategic disagreements, or even personal considerations that may have influenced his exit.
Mijungu’s move to TV47 was seen as a significant step for the station, particularly in its efforts to bolster political and current affairs programming. Given his extensive experience in journalism, he was expected to play a crucial role in shaping news coverage and analysis. However, his departure after just one month suggests deeper issues that may have led to the premature termination.
This is not the first time Mijungu has experienced an unexpected exit from a major media house. In 2020, he was among the journalists laid off by NTV in a wave of restructuring.
Ken Mijungu boasts a rich career in the media industry, having worked with some of Kenya’s top media houses, including:
- CCTV Africa – Early reporting experience
- MediaMax Network Ltd – Journalist
- Nation Media Group (NTV) – Senior Reporter & Host of Sidebar
- Standard Group (KTN News) – News Anchor & Political Affairs Host
Beyond journalism, Mijungu is also a qualified lawyer, having obtained his law degree from Moi University. Additionally, he runs a successful car hire business, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit.
With his sudden exit, speculation is rife about Mijungu’s next career move. Will he join another major TV station, transition to digital media, or focus on his law and business ventures?
Given the rise of independent journalism in Kenya, he may choose to establish his own media platform, joining the ranks of other veteran journalists who have ventured into digital content creation. Whatever path he takes, Mijungu’s influence in Kenya’s media and political discourse is far from over.
