Kakamega County Governor, Fernandes Barasa, has announced an ambitious plan to upgrade Eregi Teachers Training College (ETTC) into a fully-fledged university, marking a significant milestone in the region’s educational landscape. The announcement came during a meeting with stakeholders from the Idhako South community at his home in Harambee, Matungu Sub-County.
Governor Barasa emphasized that this initiative is part of the county’s broader development strategy aimed at enhancing educational opportunities for residents. By collaborating closely with the National Government, the county administration aims to transform ETTC into a hub of higher learning that offers a variety of courses to students from Kakamega and neighboring counties.
“This is among one of our ambitious development plans that Kakamega County aims to actualize and enroll more students in special courses,” Governor Barasa revealed. The planned upgrade is based on recommendations from a task force appointed by the Governor, which suggested that ETTC become a constituent campus of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.
The new university will be situated in Ikolomani Sub County, where the existing college is located. This strategic location will make it accessible to students across the region, fostering an environment conducive to academic excellence and innovation.
In addition to the university upgrade, Governor Barasa outlined several other critical initiatives his administration is committed to. These include converting Milimani and Imalava dispensaries into self-sufficient health centers, equipping Sheywe Polytechnic, constructing Lukose Bridge, and the gazettement of Imalaba Market. The governor also promised the construction of a modern market in Shisejeri and the completion of the Butwehe last mile water connectivity project, which will benefit residents in Kaluni, Shanjesto, and Madivini areas.
These developments underscore Governor Barasa’s commitment to improving the infrastructure and services in Kakamega County, thereby enhancing the quality of life for its residents. The transformation of Eregi TTC into a university is expected to play a pivotal role in the county’s socio-economic growth by providing advanced education and training opportunities that meet the evolving needs of the job market.
The community’s response to these plans has been overwhelmingly positive, with stakeholders expressing optimism about the potential benefits. As the county works towards these goals, residents can look forward to a brighter future marked by improved educational facilities, better healthcare services, and enhanced infrastructure.
Governor Barasa’s visionary leadership and dedication to development are set to leave a lasting impact on Kakamega County, positioning it as a leading center for education and innovation in the region.
