Israeli military operations have resulted in the deaths of at least 16 Palestinians over two days. The ongoing “counter-terrorism” operations, which began on Wednesday, have intensified concerns from international bodies, including the United Nations, about the escalating conflict’s impact on an already volatile region.
The Israeli military confirmed that its raids targeted several towns and refugee camps in the northern West Bank, including Tulkarem and Jenin. The Palestinian health ministry corroborated the death toll of 16, which includes seven militants killed on Thursday alone. Among those killed was Muhammad Jaber, known as Abu Shujaa, a commander of the Islamic Jihad militant group in the Nur Shams refugee camp.
According to the Israeli military, the operations have aimed to eliminate militant threats, citing the deaths of five militants in the Tulkarem refugee camp and two others in Jenin. However, the raids have drawn sharp criticism for their heavy-handed approach, with Tulkarem’s governor, Mustafa Taqatqa, describing the actions as “unprecedented” and a “dangerous signal.”
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported significant destruction in the affected areas, with Israeli forces repurposing homes as military positions and effectively besieging several medical facilities. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate cessation of the operations, condemning the use of airstrikes and the resulting loss of civilian lives, including children. “These dangerous developments are fuelling an already explosive situation in the occupied West Bank,” Guterres warned.
Footage from the affected areas, including Tulkarem, shows extensive damage, with bulldozers ripping up streets and infrastructure significantly impacted. Witnesses reported Israeli forces withdrawing from the Al-Farra refugee camp in Tubas, where several Palestinians, including two teenagers, were killed on Wednesday.
Clashes continued in Jenin, with Israeli forces operating amid empty streets and drones overhead. In addition to the fatalities, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club reported that at least 45 people had been detained in the West Bank since the operations began. An Israeli military spokesman confirmed the arrest of “10 wanted individuals.”
The raids in the West Bank are occurring against a backdrop of continued violence in the Gaza Strip, where Israeli military actions have killed “dozens” of militants, according to Israeli reports. The Palestinian civil defense agency in Gaza stated that Israeli shelling killed five displaced Palestinians in a tent east of Khan Yunis.
The conflict, which escalated following Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, has resulted in severe humanitarian crises on both sides. The UN reported that at least 637 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since the Gaza war began, with 19 Israelis killed in Palestinian attacks or during military operations in the same period.
The violence has devastated Gaza, displacing much of its 2.4 million population and crippling essential services. The World Health Organization has announced that Israel agreed to a series of “humanitarian pauses” in parts of Gaza to facilitate a vaccination drive after the first case of polio was confirmed in the territory.
Amid calls for a ceasefire from regional and international leaders, the violence continues to exact a heavy toll on civilians. Jordan’s King Abdullah II has urged for an immediate halt to hostilities, while Iran’s foreign ministry condemned the Israeli operations as a continuation of the conflict in Gaza. As the situation unfolds, the international community watches with growing concern, calling for a resolution to the bloodshed that has affected thousands of lives on both sides.
