Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication, and the Digital Economy, Dr. Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u, has launched a series of Jitume Digital Hubs in Kakamega County. These hubs are set to transform access to online opportunities while fostering innovation, inclusivity, and economic empowerment across communities.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Ndung’u highlighted the transformative potential of digital hubs in shaping the future of Kenya’s digital economy. “I see immense potential in the Digital Hubs as centers of innovation and inclusion. My vision for these hubs goes beyond providing computers; I envision a diverse range of equipment, including tools for the creative economy, such as podcasting and videography gear, enabling our youth to produce and monetize audio and video content,” she said.
Bridging the Digital Divide
The government has emphasized the critical role of affordable internet access in addressing the digital divide, which has long hindered equitable opportunities in education, employment, and entrepreneurship. The Jitume Digital Hubs initiative aims to make internet access a reality for all Kenyans, including individuals in rural and marginalized areas.
Dr. Ndung’u stressed the importance of inclusivity, stating that the hubs will integrate Assistive Technology Devices to ensure seamless access for people with disabilities. This approach underscores the government’s commitment to fostering equal opportunities for all citizens in the digital era.
Boosting ICT Access and Education
The pilot phase of the Jitume Digital Hubs, launched a year ago, has already shown significant progress. ICT access among students at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions has skyrocketed from 20% to 80%. These hubs have also introduced specialized programs aimed at uplifting vulnerable groups, such as young mothers.
Dr. Ndung’u revealed that a newly introduced ICT training program has seen 20 teenage mothers enroll. “This is a testament to the gains that can be made when access to learning opportunities meets sacrifice and determination,” she said, emphasizing the life-changing potential of digital skills education.
Operational Hubs in Kakamega
At least eight Jitume Digital Hubs are now fully operational in Kakamega County. These hubs are strategically located in institutions including:
- Shamberere National Polytechnic
- Mumias West Technical Training Institute (TTI)
- Sigalagala National Polytechnic
- Khwisero Technical and Vocational College (TVC)
- Kakamega County Polytechnic
- Chevaywa TVC
- St. Paul’s Shianda Vocational College
- Butere Technical Training Institute
These facilities provide access to computers, high-speed internet, and creative tools, equipping students and community members with the resources to thrive in a digital economy.
Catalysts for Economic Growth
The launch of the Jitume Digital Hubs aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030, which aims to position the country as a globally competitive digital economy. By providing young people with the skills and resources they need to succeed in online jobs, the government is addressing unemployment while nurturing local talent.
Moreover, the hubs are designed to act as incubation centers for budding entrepreneurs. They offer tools for the creative economy, such as podcasting and videography equipment, enabling users to create and monetize content. This multi-pronged approach ensures that the hubs not only foster learning but also drive innovation and economic self-reliance.
Looking Ahead
As Kenya continues its journey towards digital inclusivity, initiatives like the Jitume Digital Hubs stand out as beacons of hope and opportunity. With a focus on innovation, accessibility, and inclusivity, these hubs are poised to redefine how young people access education, employment, and entrepreneurial opportunities in the digital age.
Dr. Ndung’u’s vision for the hubs underscores a broader commitment to building a digital-first Kenya. “The success of these hubs is a testament to what we can achieve when we combine access with determination. Together, we can empower our youth and transform our economy,” she concluded.
With the successful implementation of the Jitume Digital Hubs, Kakamega County is setting the pace for a nationwide rollout, promising a brighter future for Kenya’s youth.
