The family of Peter Muteti, a 22-year-old social media influencer known for his engaging posts on X (formerly Twitter), is desperately appealing for help after his alleged abduction in Uthiru, Nairobi. Muteti, who has garnered a significant online following, was reportedly taken outside his apartment complex on Saturday morning by four armed men, including one in police uniform.
Witnesses recounted the harrowing incident, which occurred around 9 a.m. Two armed men reportedly jumped out of a moving vehicle, registration number KCF 035M, and forcibly bundled Muteti into the car before speeding off. Shortly after the abduction, his mobile phone was switched off, leaving him unreachable.
Threats Before Disappearance
Mary Wambui, Muteti’s girlfriend, revealed that he had been living in fear following a series of threatening messages he received on X. The threats came after Muteti posted a controversial picture of President William Ruto on Thursday afternoon. Although he deleted the post later that evening out of fear for his safety, the threats persisted.
“Friday morning, he saw some suspicious men near the apartment. He was scared and deleted the post, but it seems the threats continued,” Wambui said, visibly distraught.
Family’s Plea for Action
Muteti’s cousin, Christine Kendi, called for transparency and accountability from authorities. “We appeal to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Kenya Police to act swiftly. We understand that Peter has been vocal online, but if he committed any offense, due process should be followed. He should not just disappear—he should be produced in court,” she said.
Kelvin Njeru, Muteti’s brother, expressed concern over the involvement of uniformed personnel in the abduction. “One of the abductors wore a police uniform. We reported the case to Kabete Police Station, but they claim they don’t know anything about his whereabouts. How can such a thing happen in broad daylight, involving someone in uniform?”
The family has also faced challenges in obtaining critical evidence. They accused the apartment management and a nearby supermarket, where witnesses claimed the abduction occurred, of being uncooperative in providing CCTV footage.
Public Outrage and Online Campaign
The abduction has sparked a wave of outrage across social media platforms, with Kenyans demanding Muteti’s immediate release. The incident has also reignited debates about enforced disappearances and the increasing number of extrajudicial actions in the country.
Online users have started the hashtag #BringBackMuteti, calling for accountability and highlighting the risks faced by individuals who are vocal online. “Freedom of expression is a right, not a privilege. If there was an issue with his post, there are legal channels to address it. We cannot allow this culture of fear to persist,” tweeted one user.
Authorities Launch Investigation
Detectives from Kabete Police Station have taken over the case and assured the family that investigations are underway. However, as of now, no progress has been reported, leaving the family in anguish.
The family has called on the government and human rights organizations to intervene and ensure Muteti’s safe return. “This is not just about Peter; it’s about every Kenyan who has been silenced through fear and intimidation. We need answers, and we need them now,” said Kendi.
Growing Concerns Over Enforced Disappearances
This case adds to a growing list of enforced disappearances in Kenya, where individuals have gone missing under suspicious circumstances. Advocacy groups have repeatedly raised alarms over the issue, citing the lack of accountability and transparency in addressing such cases.
Muteti’s disappearance underscores the dangers faced by outspoken individuals in Kenya and raises questions about the limits of freedom of speech. As his family awaits answers, their plea resonates with many: “Justice must prevail, and those responsible must be held accountable.”
Detectives continue their investigations, but the family and Kenyans at large demand swift action and transparency in uncovering the truth about Peter Muteti’s fate.
