A farm manager was killed during a confrontation with a group of individuals who invaded a disputed piece of land in the Ngata area of Nakuru County. The incident, which occurred early Tuesday morning, has highlighted the rising tensions and violence associated with land ownership issues in the region.
The confrontation took place around 2 a.m. when the farm manager, whose identity has not been disclosed, noticed approximately 20 people demolishing structures on the disputed land in the Menengai area. According to the police, the invaders arrived in two vehicles and were armed with crude weapons, indicating a premeditated and coordinated attack.
Upon discovering the intrusion, the farm manager immediately alerted the farm’s owner and rallied security personnel and farm employees to confront the invaders. This led to a violent altercation, during which the manager was struck on the head with a stone. Despite being rushed to Valley Hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival. The deceased’s body has since been transferred to the Nakuru Municipal Annex mortuary for an autopsy.
The disputed land has been at the center of a longstanding conflict, with a court visit pending for fact-finding before a ruling could be made. Police have stated that they are actively searching for the individuals involved in the raid for questioning and possible prosecution on murder charges.
Rising Land Disputes and Violence in Nakuru
This tragic incident is not an isolated one. Police in Nakuru have expressed concern over the increasing number of violent confrontations related to land disputes. The region has seen a surge in such cases, largely attributed to land grabbers targeting prime parcels of land. Many of these disputes remain unresolved, pending further investigation.
Nakuru’s local officials and law enforcement are particularly troubled by this trend, as it undermines the safety and security of the community. They emphasize the need for more stringent measures and quicker judicial resolutions to curb the rising violence over land ownership.
Similar Incident in Embu County
In a related development, police in Runyenjes, Embu County, are investigating the suspected murder of a 25-year-old man, Kelvin Gitonga Kariuki. His body was discovered in a coffee plantation in Kyeni North West Location, bearing visible injuries to his left eye, left cheek, and right ribs. Authorities believe that Kariuki was killed elsewhere and his body dumped in the coffee plantation.
The motive behind Kariuki’s murder is still unclear, but police are diligently working to piece together the circumstances leading to his death. The scene was thoroughly processed, and his body has been taken to Tenri Ena Hospital Morgue for an autopsy examination.
Police have vowed to pursue justice for Kariuki and are exploring the possibility of a primary crime scene where the murder may have initially taken place. This case further underscores the pressing issue of violence and unresolved conflicts within the community.
