FIFA, has extended bans on seven Ugandan individuals implicated in match-fixing scandals from the 2023/2024 season. The decision affects five players and two referees who were previously sanctioned by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA).
Ahmed Hussein, the head of Communication for FUFA, confirmed the global enforcement of these sanctions. “FIFA has extended worldwide sanctions on Ugandan players and referees who had earlier been suspended by FUFA in 2023 for engaging in match manipulation,” stated the Uganda FA in a press release issued on Friday.
The two referees, George Nkurunziza and Deogracious Opio, have received the most severe punishments with 10-year bans each. This decision comes after a thorough investigation revealed their involvement in activities that compromised the fairness and integrity of football matches.
The five players facing five-year bans include:
- Saleh Maganda, formerly with Calvary FC
- Franco Oringa, formerly with Northern Gateway FC
- Godfrey Lwesibawa, formerly with Gaddafi FC
- Yahaya Mahad Kakooza, formerly with Gaddafi FC
- Andrew Waiswa, formerly with Gaddafi FC
These sanctions are part of FIFA’s broader efforts to combat match-fixing and corruption in football. By extending these bans worldwide, FIFA aims to ensure that the individuals involved are unable to participate in any football-related activities globally, thereby protecting the sport’s integrity across all levels.
Match-fixing is a serious violation of the principles of fair play and sportsmanship. The extended bans serve as a stern warning to all stakeholders in the sport about the severe consequences of engaging in such unethical practices. FIFA and FUFA remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of transparency and fairness in football.
The Uganda FA has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards match-fixing and emphasized its dedication to working closely with FIFA to prevent any future incidents. This collaboration is crucial in fostering a culture of honesty and integrity within the sport.
As the football community absorbs the impact of these sanctions, it is clear that the commitment to preserving the sanctity of the game is unwavering. The extended bans underscore the serious repercussions for those who attempt to undermine the core values of football through dishonest practices.
