Kenya’s agriculture sector continues to play a crucial role in both national security and economic development. This was the key message during a visit by military officers from the Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC) in Karen to Kakuzi’s agricultural facilities in Murang’a County. The officers, led by JCSC Commandant Major General Eric Kinuthia, toured Kakuzi’s avocado, macadamia, and livestock operations, gaining insights into how agriculture serves as a strategic economic driver.
Kakuzi Managing Director Chris Flowers emphasized agriculture’s significance, stating that the sector is the backbone of Kenya’s economy and a key national security factor. “The role of the agriculture sector in Kenya’s economy cannot be understated as it plays a crucial national security catalyst that ultimately fosters economic and social growth,” Flowers said.
According to the National Economic Survey 2024, agriculture remains the dominant sector in Kenya’s economy. The agribusiness sub-sector, in particular, has shown impressive growth. Earnings from fresh horticultural exports increased from KSh 146.1 billion in 2022 to KSh 147.2 billion in 2023. The volume of exported fruits rose by 44.1% to 188.1 thousand tonnes, while vegetable exports more than doubled to 147.7 thousand tonnes in the same period.
Kakuzi, a major player in the agribusiness industry, has recorded significant financial gains. The company reported a 35% increase in half-year turnover, reaching KSh 1.175 billion. Avocado revenues surged by 42% to KSh 951 million, while macadamia earnings rebounded, posting a KSh 32 million profit compared to a KSh 329 million loss in 2023. Sustainable wood products also saw a 54% profit increase, reaching KSh 71 million.
The visit by JCSC officers, which included representatives from 16 countries, aimed to deepen their understanding of agriculture’s strategic importance. Established in 1983, JCSC trains Kenya Defence Forces officers and international counterparts in advanced command and staff roles.
By integrating agriculture with national security planning, Kenya can further strengthen food security, economic resilience, and overall national stability. The sector’s continued growth will be instrumental in shaping the country’s future.
