The Board of Directors of Absa Bank Kenya has announced the appointment of Anne Nyongesa as the new Company Secretary, effective Friday, February 28, 2025. Nyongesa takes over from Wilson Murage, who has left the company to pursue other interests.
In a statement, Board Chairman Charles Muchene welcomed Nyongesa to the role, expressing confidence in her ability to contribute effectively to the company. “The Board of Directors of Absa Bank Kenya PLC (“Absa Kenya”) is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Anne Nyongesa as the Company Secretary of Absa Kenya with effect from 28 February 2025,” Muchene said. “We take this opportunity to welcome Ms. Nyongesa to this role and service to the Board.”
Nyongesa brings extensive experience in legal and governance matters, having served in various company secretary roles within the financial services sector. She is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with 17 years of post-admission experience and is also a Certified Public Secretary (Kenya).
Her academic qualifications include a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree from the University of South Africa and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from the University of Nairobi. She is a member of the Institute of Certified Secretaries (ICS) and holds a practicing certificate as a company secretary under the Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya Act (Chapter 534, Laws of Kenya).
Nyongesa’s appointment follows a period of transition within Absa Kenya’s company secretarial office. Murage, who assumed the role of Interim Company Secretary in October 2023, was confirmed as the substantive Company Secretary on May 28, 2024. He had stepped into the role following the resignation of his predecessor, Gakumo, who had served as Company Secretary from April 2019 to mid-2023.
As she takes over the role, Nyongesa is expected to bring strategic governance expertise and legal acumen to Absa Kenya’s leadership team. Her extensive experience in corporate governance and company law will be instrumental in guiding the bank’s compliance with regulatory requirements and supporting the Board’s strategic direction.
Meanwhile, the Board expressed gratitude to Murage for his service and wished him success in his future endeavors. “We take this opportunity to appreciate Mr. Murage for his dedicated service to the Board and wish him the very best as he pursues his next career opportunities,” the statement read.
Nyongesa’s appointment reflects Absa Kenya’s commitment to strong corporate governance and leadership continuity, ensuring the bank remains well-positioned to navigate Kenya’s evolving financial landscape.
