The Real Leather, Stay Different (RLSD) Africa Talent Leather Design Showcase returns for its third edition in Africa, continuing its mission to promote sustainability in fashion. The global initiative, led by the Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA) in partnership with the Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI), provides a platform for designers to explore leather’s potential as an ethical and durable alternative to synthetic materials.
A key highlight of RLSD is its design competition, which invites emerging and established designers to craft innovative leather products. Unlike petroleum-based synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon, leather is a naturally occurring by-product of the meat industry, making it a more sustainable option for fashion.
Kerry Brozyna, President of LHCA, emphasized the importance of sustainability in fashion: “Consumers are informed, and change is inevitable. Leather stands at the heart of slow fashion due to its durability, offering an ethical and sustainable alternative to disposable fashion trends.”
The 2024 edition, held alongside Africa Sourcing and Fashion Week in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, showcased 14 outstanding finalists under the theme “Redefining Fashion’s Environmental Footprint.” Ethiopian designer Ruth Girmay was named Most Commendable Designer for her Overfishing Bag, inspired by marine conservation. Kenyan designer Stephen Maosa won the People’s Choice Award for his Transformable Travel Bag, crafted from upcycled denim and leather.
For the 2025 edition, RLSD aims to expand its reach across Africa, encouraging designers to use at least 50% natural leather in their creations. Participants must submit a single design in one of three categories: apparel, footwear, or accessories. Submissions must include storyboards, sketches, technical specifications, and concept explanations, with an optional short video presentation.
Finalists will showcase their designs in December 2025, with the Most Commendable Designer earning a spot at the RLSD International Showcase. A public vote will determine the People’s Choice Award winner.
