The Office of the Auditor-General (OAG) has achieved a significant milestone in its commitment to data security and transparency after being awarded the ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification for Information Security Management Systems (ISMS) by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
During the official award ceremony held on Thursday, KEBS Managing Director Esther Ngari presented the certification to Auditor-General Nancy Gathungu, commending the office’s dedication to upholding the highest standards of information security and public sector governance.
Ngari noted that the certification serves as a vital framework for protecting sensitive information, ensuring the credibility, confidentiality, and accessibility of financial statements and audit records. “This achievement reflects the Auditor-General’s commitment to excellence, transparency, and accountability in public service,” she said.
Recognizing the critical role of the Auditor-General’s Office in Kenya’s democratic architecture, Ngari stated that the certification demonstrates the institution’s ability to exceed international benchmarks in information security. The OAG, responsible for auditing public resources at both national and county levels, now operates under enhanced safeguards that protect its systems against emerging cyber threats.
“In a digital age where data is a national asset and threats are ever-evolving, this certification positions the Auditor-General’s Office as a leader in secure, technology-driven auditing practices,” Ngari added.
The certification supports the OAG’s shift toward modern, efficient, and secure systems, which are essential for maintaining institutional credibility and public trust. Ngari also emphasized that any breach in such a high-profile institution could have far-reaching impacts on national stability, making the implementation of robust information security measures imperative.
KEBS, accredited by the Dutch Accreditation Council (RVA), assured continued support to institutions like the OAG through regular surveillance audits and technical assistance to maintain high standards.
“This globally recognized certification not only affirms the Auditor-General’s position as a top-tier audit institution in Africa but also enhances Kenya’s reputation in the global quality infrastructure,” Ngari concluded.
