The Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) has taken a decisive step in curbing the growing influence of gambling in Kenya by suspending all gambling advertisements for 30 days. The board has also issued several recommendations aimed at tightening regulatory oversight of the betting industry, urging immediate action from Parliament, the public, and regulatory bodies.
BCLB Chairperson Jane Mwikali called on the National Assembly to expedite the enactment of the long-pending Gambling Control Bill. According to Mwikali, this legislation is vital for empowering the board with stronger enforcement and supervisory powers. “The National Assembly is urged to expedite the enactment of the Gambling Control Bill to empower the sector regulator with enhanced enforcement and supervisory powers,” she stated.
In addition to legislative reforms, BCLB is calling on the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) to finalize and operationalize a new programming code. This would replace the previous code that was declared unconstitutional, ensuring media content aligns with legal and ethical standards.
The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has also been urged to take immediate action to block and deactivate all foreign, unlicensed gambling websites operating within the country. BCLB emphasized that such measures are essential to safeguarding consumers and maintaining the integrity of Kenya’s gambling sector.
Mwikali further urged Kenyans to report any suspected illegal gambling activities to BCLB or the nearest police stations to facilitate swift investigations and action. The board noted with concern the increasing portrayal of gambling as a legitimate investment or shortcut to wealth, a trend that has led to adverse social and economic consequences for individuals, families, and communities.
The board’s latest move comes amid rising concerns over the proliferation of gambling activities, including betting, gaming, lotteries, prize competitions, and promotional campaigns. Mwikali stressed that without proper oversight, these activities risk undermining the country’s social fabric.
BCLB’s proactive stance marks a crucial step toward addressing the gambling crisis in Kenya, with hopes that coordinated efforts from legislators, regulators, and the public will foster a safer and more responsible betting environment.
