Bob Dewar, the legendary public relations expert and motorsport enthusiast, passed away in Nairobi at the age of 91. A key figure behind the prestigious Concours d’Elegance and a founder of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club, Dewar leaves behind a lasting legacy in Kenya’s PR and motoring industries.
Born to English parents, Bob grew up in Nairobi and developed a passion for cars from an early age. He studied law at Oxford University but soon realized that his heart lay elsewhere. After completing his studies, he returned to Kenya and joined Caltex Oil in 1957, marking the beginning of a distinguished career. His role at Caltex exposed him to public relations, and by 1970, he had founded Bob Dewar Publicity, one of Kenya’s pioneering PR firms.
Dewar’s PR firm became synonymous with excellence, handling prestigious clients like British Airways, Farmers Choice, Total, Serena Hotels, and Alfa Romeo. His meticulous approach and commitment to maintaining strong media relations earned him widespread respect. He famously distributed corporate giveaways discreetly, ensuring they reached the right recipients without creating unnecessary expectations.
While building a successful PR career, Dewar never lost his love for cars. In the 1970s, while managing public relations for Alfa Romeo, he was tasked with organizing a gathering for owners of the prestigious car brand. This meeting laid the foundation for the Alfa Romeo Owners Club, which later evolved into the renowned Concours d’Elegance.
The inaugural Concours event featured just ten cars, but its popularity soared, leading to its expansion. By the 1980s, the event was open to all vehicle brands, drawing enthusiasts from across the region. Under Dewar’s stewardship, it became a premier showcase for vintage cars and motorcycles, as well as a major social and family event.
Despite his many achievements, Bob remained humble, sharp-witted, and deeply passionate about his work. He never married, dedicating his time to motorsports, gardening, photography, and his vast network of friends.
Bob Dewar’s contributions to Kenya’s PR and motorsport scene will be remembered for generations. His impact, both in the corporate world and on the racetrack, cements his place as a true pioneer.
