China has donated over 2,000 metric tonnes of rice to support nearly three million Kenyans living in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) counties. The food aid, valued at approximately Ksh 360 million, aims to assist families struggling with food insecurity due to prolonged drought and erratic rainfall patterns.
The donation was officially launched in Kumpa, Kajiado Central, by Zhou Zhencheng, Minister Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Kenya. Speaking at the event, Zhou reaffirmed China’s unwavering commitment to supporting Kenya in times of crisis, whether caused by drought or floods. He emphasized that the food aid represents not only an act of humanitarian care but also an embodiment of China-Africa cooperation in tackling global challenges.
“The People’s Republic of China will continue supporting Kenya during such tough times as the two countries enjoy mutual bilateral relations,” Zhou stated. He further highlighted that the partnership between Kenya and China has extended beyond emergency assistance to include socio-economic development initiatives.
The ASAL regions, which span 23 counties, have been grappling with food shortages due to below-average rainfall in the past two years. The situation has been exacerbated by the lingering effects of the prolonged 2021-2023 drought, which saw five consecutive failed rainy seasons. The current aid is expected to bring much-needed relief to affected communities, alleviating hunger and enhancing food security.
During the event, Beatrice Askul, Cabinet Secretary for East African Community (EAC), Arid and Semi-Arid Lands & Regional Development, expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for its timely intervention. She acknowledged that while humanitarian aid plays a crucial role, long-term solutions are necessary to address food insecurity sustainably.
“We have received 40,000 bags of rice to assist communities in ASAL areas who are facing drought due to below-normal rainfall in the counties. Even as we do so, we are emphasizing the need for alternative sources of livelihoods,” Askul remarked. She urged affected communities to explore climate-resilient agricultural practices and other sustainable income-generating activities.
China’s donation underscores the importance of international collaboration in addressing food security challenges and highlights the deepening diplomatic and developmental relations between Kenya and China. The support will provide immediate relief while reinforcing efforts to build resilience against future climatic adversities.
