As the planting season draws near, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has called on farmers to take advantage of the affordable fertilizer available at National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots. Speaking during the Mount Kenya Tour with the president at Narumoru, Kagwe assured farmers that the government is committed to ensuring they access quality agricultural inputs at subsidized prices to boost productivity.
The subsidized fertilizer program is part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance food security, improve crop yields, and reduce the production costs for smallholder farmers. With the rising demand for fertilizers, Kagwe emphasized that the Ministry of Agriculture is actively working to replenish stocks at NCPB depots across the country to meet the growing needs of farmers.
“We are keen on ensuring that fertilizer is available in all regions of the country as we approach the planting season. This program is designed to reduce the cost burden on farmers and to make quality fertilizers accessible to them,” Kagwe stated. The initiative is part of the government’s commitment to providing farmers with the necessary tools for success, especially as they face rising costs of production.
In addition to fertilizer access, Kagwe highlighted the importance of structured markets for agricultural produce. During a visit to the Naromoru Market, he and other leaders engaged with traders, stressing how organized markets help stabilize prices, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve linkages between farmers and buyers. Structured markets are vital for ensuring fair prices for both farmers and consumers, thereby improving overall market efficiency.
The call for farmers to take advantage of the NCPB fertilizer depots comes at a crucial time when the government is prioritizing efforts to enhance food security and support agricultural productivity in Kenya. With these efforts, the government hopes to ease the financial burden on farmers and encourage more efficient and sustainable farming practices.
