The Kenyan government has introduced stringent measures to protect its citizens working abroad from exploitation, ensuring they have a safe and conducive working environment.
Labour and Skills Development Principal Secretary (PS) Shadrack Mwadime revealed that the government has signed bilateral labour agreements designed to safeguard Kenyan employees from mistreatment. These agreements align with international labour standards, specifically the International Labour Organization (ILO) Model, which upholds human rights in the workplace.
“This initiative will guarantee the rights of our young Kenyans as they work in these countries,” stated PS Mwadime.
To reinforce these protective measures, the government is deploying labour attachés to various nations where Kenyan workers are employed. These officials will serve as a direct link between the employees and the Kenyan government, ensuring any grievances or challenges faced by the workers are promptly addressed.
“In case anybody finds themselves in a difficult situation, they can easily reach out to a government officer who will be able to attend to their needs,” PS Mwadime assured.
Additionally, the government has instructed its foreign embassies to maintain active communication with Kenyan employees in their respective host nations. This move aims to ensure that the well-being and rights of Kenyan workers are consistently monitored and upheld.
PS Mwadime made these remarks at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi during the flagging-off ceremony of over 16 Kenyans who are heading to Oman for employment opportunities. The event underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and dignity of Kenyan workers abroad.
Kenya has long been a source of migrant labour to various countries, particularly in the Middle East. However, cases of exploitation, abuse, and mistreatment have been reported, prompting the government to take action. These new measures aim to prevent such occurrences and provide a structured support system for Kenyans working overseas.
By implementing these reforms, the Kenyan government hopes to create a safe and empowering environment for its citizens seeking employment opportunities beyond its borders, ensuring their rights and welfare are upheld at all times.
