The government has launched investigations into the frequent fires at Nairobi’s Gikomba and Toi markets, with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki affirming that President William Ruto has ordered security agencies to uncover the root cause and recommend long-term solutions.
Speaking during a meeting with traders affected by the latest Gikomba fire, Kindiki dismissed claims that the fires are accidental, noting that they occur annually sometimes multiple times a year causing massive losses to small-scale traders.
“It doesn’t make sense to imagine these fires are mere accidents. The president has directed a thorough probe to ensure we solve this problem once and for all,” he state
To prevent future tragedies, the government has announced plans to construct at least 10 modern high-rise markets in Nairobi, including in Gikomba, Toi, and Muthurwa. These facilities will provide traders with dignified, well-structured workspaces equipped with essential amenities such as water, electricity, cold storage for perishable goods, and even lactating rooms for breastfeeding mothers.
“Our Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda ensures even small-scale traders operate in safe, modern environments,” Kindiki said. The national government will build the markets before handing them over to county authorities for management.
Additionally, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) have been directed to expand access roads in these markets to ease movement of goods and people while enabling faster emergency responses.
The move comes as traders continue to suffer losses from suspicious fires, with many demanding answers. The government insists the new measures will bring an end to the perennial disasters, restoring confidence among business owners.
