United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Hassan Omar is leading a high-level party delegation to China in a strategic move to strengthen political cooperation and deepen party-to-party relations with the Communist Party of China (CPC). The seven-day visit, which began on Saturday, April 12, follows an invitation from the CPC and underscores UDA’s growing focus on international political partnerships.
The delegation departed Nairobi and is expected to arrive at Beijing Daxing International Airport on Sunday, April 13. According to a statement by UDA, the trip aims to enhance collaboration on party-building strategies and to support Kenya-China bilateral relations, especially in the realm of development cooperation.
“The visit aims at enhancing UDA and CPC party-to-party collaboration, and in return strengthen Kenya’s bilateral relations with China in all spheres,” the party noted. “China is certainly a valued partner in our development.”
The delegation’s itinerary includes key engagements with top CPC leadership and institutions closely tied to the party’s policymaking and development agenda. Initial meetings will involve leaders from the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the International Department of the Central Committee of the CPC (IDCPC), including the African Bureau.
On Wednesday, April 16, the delegation will travel to Fujian Province, where Chinese President Xi Jinping once served as Governor. There, the team will meet with the CPC Fujian Provincial Committee and visit institutions such as the CPC party school, grassroots party building centres, rural revitalisation projects, and the Fujian-Kenya cooperation office.
UDA highlighted that the delegation will also have an opportunity to explore Chinese history and culture through visits to key heritage sites, including the iconic Great Wall of China.
The visit concludes on April 19, after which the delegation is expected to brief both the party and the Kenyan government on key lessons and emerging opportunities for collaboration.
While earlier reports had suggested President William Ruto might lead the trip to China, the responsibility has now been taken up by Senator Omar, signaling UDA’s intention to build strong party-level international alliances.
