Michele Santorelli, an Italian philanthropist residing in Bulgaria, has announced a groundbreaking initiative to establish sustainable agriculture centres along Kenya’s rural coast. The project aims to equip local communities with skills in growing fruits and vegetables, livestock farming, and implementing innovative techniques to boost efficiency and product quality.
Santorelli, a long-time supporter of the Lea Mwana Children’s Home in Malindi, Kilifi County, discussed the initiative with Catholic Archbishop of Mombasa Martin Kivuva during a meeting on December 31. “Faith and unity can open new paths for those in need, fostering self-sufficiency and improving families’ lives,” Santorelli stated.
The centres will be managed by local dioceses, in collaboration with the government and NGOs. Santorelli also plans to partner with Bulgarian universities known for their agricultural expertise. “Through this partnership, we can blend tradition and innovation to solve rural challenges sustainably,” he said.
Santorelli’s dedication to the Kenyan coast goes beyond agriculture. On Christmas Day, he hosted a celebration for over 60 children from the Lea Mwana Children’s Home, gifting them new clothes and accessories. A special cake adorned with the flags of Kenya, Italy, and Bulgaria symbolised the nations’ connection.
In a remarkable gesture, Santorelli secured the 2025 school budget for all the children, ensuring uninterrupted education. His contributions have significantly improved the orphanage’s facilities, including food supplies and sanitary repairs during difficult times.
The philanthropist has also initiated talks with Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi to explore collaborations in education and economic development between Kenya, Italy, and Bulgaria.
The Lea Mwana Children’s Home director, Agnes Mshambala, expressed gratitude, noting, “We’ve never had such a joyous Christmas celebration. Michele Santorelli has brought hope to our home.”
Santorelli and his family, through their foundation “Creators of Hope,” continue to promote inclusion and support communities across Kenya, Italy, and Bulgaria. His efforts inspire hope and encourage others to contribute to transforming lives on Kenya’s coast.
