Kenya’s youth are seizing new opportunities through digital innovation, thanks to initiatives like the Jitume Digital Hubs. Established across the country, these hubs aim to equip young people including persons with disabilities with essential digital skills, opening pathways to education, employment, and entrepreneurship.
During a recent media tour organized by the Office of the Government Spokesperson, the transformational impact of the hubs was evident, particularly at the Maasai National Polytechnic in Kajiado County. The hubs are part of the government’s broader plan to set up 1,450 digital hubs nationwide, with a goal of creating over a million online jobs.
Leah Sonto, a 19-year-old student leader and advocate for persons with disabilities, is a shining example of this impact. Through the Jitume Hub, Leah has advanced her education and started a crocheting and beadwork business. She uses digital tools like ChatGPT to study, offers volunteer services in HELB, KRA, and KUCCPS applications, and dedicates 30 percent of her business earnings toward her school fees. For Leah, technology has unlocked a new world of independence and opportunity.
Another inspiring story is that of Emanuel Ndunda, a pioneer at the Jitume Hub, who now earns a living as a web developer, digital content creator, and graphic designer. His earnings have not only supported personal milestones, like renovating his mother’s house, but also positioned him as a Trainer of Trainers, empowering others to access online work.
Government Spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura emphasized that the Jitume Hubs are vital to Kenya’s digital transformation, while his deputy, Mr. Gabriel Muthuma, highlighted their role in nurturing a new generation of digital entrepreneurs.
With 284 hubs already launched, these centers are paving the way for a future where youth regardless of background or location can thrive in the digital economy. Leah’s words best capture the spirit of the initiative: “As we wait on the government, let us maximise the opportunities around us to be financially independent.”
In the digital age, the Jitume Hubs are truly beacons of hope and empowerment for Kenya’s young generation.
