Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho on Tuesday engaged in high-level discussions with Faisal Abdullah Al Rowas, chairperson of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, on the sidelines of the 8th Indian Ocean Conference. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral trade and investment opportunities between Kenya and Oman.
Joho emphasized the need for private sector investments across key economic sectors, highlighting Kenya’s potential in the blue economy, agriculture, mining, and construction. He particularly underscored the significance of Mombasa County’s upcoming Special Economic Zone (SEZ), which is set to attract both local and international investors.
“I highlighted the promising opportunities for investment in the blue economy, agriculture, mining, and the construction industry, particularly in the upcoming special economic zone in Mombasa County,” Joho stated.
A key area of discussion was the establishment of direct shipping lines between Kenya and Oman, which would significantly enhance trade efficiency and economic cooperation. The leaders also explored the importance of reviving and strengthening bilateral aviation agreements to facilitate smoother movement of goods and people between the two nations.
“The Sultanate of Oman has deep-rooted historical ties with the Kenya Coast, and it is essential that we leverage these connections for our mutual benefit,” Joho added.
The 8th Indian Ocean Conference, which began on Sunday, was organized to explore opportunities and challenges in maritime trade and security, renewable energy, and technological innovation. According to Oman’s Foreign Ministry, the conference brought together key stakeholders from across the region under the theme, Voyage to New Horizons of Maritime Partnership.
Initiated in 2016 by the India Foundation in Singapore, the Indian Ocean Conference has since become a flagship platform for maritime nations to deliberate on regional cooperation under the Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) framework. The event continues to serve as a vital consultative forum for critical states and principal maritime partners, fostering stronger diplomatic and economic ties.
As Kenya continues to position itself as a key player in the Indian Ocean region, such engagements are expected to yield tangible benefits, strengthening historical trade relations and opening new avenues for economic collaboration between Kenya and Oman.
