Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary (CS) Hassan Joho on Thursday hosted a high-level delegation from Ukraine, where they explored avenues for strengthening bilateral cooperation in key sectors under his ministry.
In a statement following the meeting, Joho emphasized the importance of the discussions, particularly in enhancing collaboration in the maritime, fisheries, and blue economy sub-sectors. The talks also revolved around strategies to bolster existing partnerships between Kenya and Ukraine, with a strong focus on improving market access for products from both nations.
“When we have strong relationships, we can effortlessly build economic bonds. Today, I hosted a Ukrainian delegation for an important discussion on strengthening the existing partnership between Kenya and Ukraine in the areas of maritime, fisheries, and the blue economy,” Joho stated.
He further highlighted the exchange of valuable ideas on potential areas of collaboration, specifically in improving market access for Kenyan and Ukrainian products. Additionally, the two parties explored the possibility of sea vessels bearing the national flags of their respective countries docking at their ports, a move that could enhance trade and economic exchanges between the two nations.
“I am optimistic about the potential for shared growth and development,” Joho added.
The Ukrainian delegation was led by the Honorary Consul of Ukraine to Mombasa, Oleksii Sierkov. He was accompanied by several officials, including Oksana Chernova, Krystyna Voloshyna, Larysa Shvets, Olga Arao, and Oleksandr Tykhovskyi.
Kenya’s blue economy sector has gained increasing attention in recent years, given its vast potential in creating jobs, enhancing food security, and contributing to the country’s economic growth. Ukraine, a significant player in maritime and fisheries industries, presents an opportunity for Kenya to tap into global best practices and expand its economic footprint in these sectors.
The discussions between Kenya and Ukraine align with Kenya’s broader efforts to harness its blue economy potential, foster international partnerships, and promote sustainable maritime practices. The meeting underscores the growing diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations, with expectations of increased collaborations in the near future.
