The Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) has officially announced a nationwide recruitment exercise for prison constables, scheduled to take place on April 30, 2025, at designated recruitment centers across the country. The exercise is open to both male and female Kenyan citizens who meet specific qualifications and physical requirements.
Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick Aranduh emphasized that the recruitment will be free of charge, warning prospective candidates against engaging in bribery or presenting falsified documents. “The recruitment exercise will be absolutely free. Bribery and other acts of corruption are unlawful,” he stated, adding that anyone found flouting the rules would be disqualified and prosecuted.
To qualify, candidates must:
- Be Kenyan citizens with a valid National Identity Card.
- Possess a minimum KCSE grade of D+.
- Be aged between 18 and 28 years.
- Be physically and mentally fit, with clear vision and good hearing.
- Stand at least 5 feet 4 inches tall for men and 5 feet 2 inches for women.
Female applicants are required not to be pregnant during recruitment or the initial nine-month para-military training period.
Applicants must carry original copies of essential documents on the recruitment day, including their National ID, birth certificate, KRA PIN, academic certificates, and any relevant testimonials.
The constables’ responsibilities will span multiple roles within the prison system, including custody and supervision of inmates, maintaining order and security, and escorting inmates to courts, hospitals, or other facilities. Additionally, constables play a critical role in rehabilitation efforts such as education, vocational training, and religious programs, while also helping to maintain discipline among inmates.
They will be expected to keep accurate records of inmate behavior and movements, write reports, and assist in logistics like food distribution and hygiene management. Constables will also support community reintegration efforts for inmates nearing release.
The Kenya Prisons Service urges all qualified individuals to attend the recruitment exercise at the designated centers on the specified date and play a part in contributing to national security and inmate rehabilitation.
